Last night I'll ever be this way A date once known just as today When you've gone, the change will stay Let seasons come as seasons may [Unused lyrics for bridge:] (Windows frame our natures' bounds Green to red and gold to brown Time has come to dive in now Broken glass, saudades sound Grains of sand are falling free Soft and slow, it seems to me Surrender now to gravity Ends are worth a brighter earth of Piled leaves) A spotted mind's seen brighter days Our love was lived in yesterdays Meant to be, not meant to stay Our seasons came, then went away Our seasons came, then went away

Autumn 04:02
Sketched and left to age Set to turn the page All your ink spilt like Autumn leaves Certain and softly Till the colors covered me Stanzas tangling So quite new a thing Eye to eye despite mine cast down And yours dancing through the clouds Autumn paints with sky the ground Sap so sweet seeping through broken skin Views so sanguine, standing up out on a limb Just like any fool, climbed on in Poised to plummet, higher off original sin (If there's an after all) Through cracked limbs and sap recall Savoring the fall Golden from afar (A muse so used to trope projection) Crimson though you are (Aglow with indigo complexion) All the green that you hope to see Plant it now with me Silent, underneath a tree Sap so sweet seeping through broken skin Views so sanguine, standing up out on a limb Just like any fool, climbed on in Poised to plummet, higher off original sin It's not too late The leaves aren't brown No ice to skate I could climb back down It's not too late (A stock in leaves of tea competing) The leaves aren't brown No ice to skate (With fear of heights and mights receding) I could climb back down Cold and quiet blanketing what had been Sheets of snow just diamonds to wrap ourselves in Ice is unavoidable, Autumns end Complex reflection--just another way to see you again Sap so sweet seeping through broken skin Views so sanguine, standing up out on a limb Just like any fool, climbed on in Poised to plummet, higher off original sin (If there's an after all) Through cracked limbs and sap recall Savoring the fall

Loop Vines 03:03
I see My reputation is Dangling From expectations I bought as truth, colors wheels are spinnin' Thoughts accrue, most of them involving you Jumpstart My heart's feelin' like a feather Loop vines growin' Like Ocean This ain't no dream My tongue Could never mold all the Words I've sung 'Till you unfolded my Cautious limbs, your eyes are singin' me Auspicious hymns, so sweet it couldn't be a sin Encore Hope for the best is gettin' better Than September's Shy remembers Have led us to January's Fait accompli Like I always knew You, I've been waiting for you You, I've been waiting for you You, I've been waiting for you You, I've been waiting for you You, I've been waiting for you You, I've been waiting for you And wanted you to know it

Pantomime 05:42
Blinds drawn all summer for eyes on you Been feeling jaded and turning blue Our story not so quite new The words I had once flew Leaving their shadows in lieu Time shades our portrait in muted tones Our timber torn down into a home Drawn to the whispers of windows Troubled by their prose Unsure how deep these roots grow We've found a rhythm but the words don't rhyme Leaves shaking in the sunshine These limbs can offer only pantomime Calm concrete in the streetlight Embroidered memories and furnished sites The borrowed phrases and hands held tight What would become of what's right? Unbearably White? All colors drained by hindsight We've found a rhythm but the words don't rhyme Leaves shaking in the sunshine These limbs can offer only pantomime Calm concrete in the streetlight I wish I felt the same Or something like that way The reasons we can't change But tried to Wishing what is wasn't true We've found a rhythm but the words don't rhyme Leaves shaking in the sunshine These limbs can offer only pantomime Calm concrete in the streetlight Dizzy looking up at what we climbed I've fallen for the last time Sit in the shade and sip your loss like wine I've fallen for the last time

Glad that we felt the same Sad that we felt that way To live this seems so strange Guess we're the leaves that change Wistfully waste away From August straight through May Halcyon memories play A bittersweet bouquet Overcast but past the point of rain If we were always fated for to end Did I just waste your time, did I just hurt a friend? I play us over in my mind again Now if the past is all we got, well, here's to then I'm grateful for the time Harvested from the vine Makes for a sparkling wine To past stained lips consign Hands we'd hold now fold like poetry Hope to find my mind as peacefully If we were always fated for to end Did I just waste your time, did I just hurt a friend? I play us over in my mind again No longer what we are, but I love what we'd been That's half the story probably less, even Now that the future's all we got, well, here's to then A rusted rose grown old Still catches light like gold Your pigment stained charcoal Page turned, but with a fold A rusted rose grown old (Now Autumn's breeze has come) Still catches light like gold (Its changes just begun) Your pigment stained charcoal (Resolve to feel the sun) Page turned, but with a fold (September's requiem) Strong but slow our broken limbs will grow Braced by storms we'd borne for warmth of snow If we were always fated for to end Did I just waste your time, did I just hurt a friend? I play us over in my mind again No longer what we are, but I love what we'd been That's half the story probably less, even Now that the future's all we got, well, here's to then Here's to then Here's to then

about

One of the best things about music as a passion / hobby / artform is that it has many modes. There’s live performance, there’s the craft of songwriting, and there’s the process of recording and mixing songs. When one grows stale, or becomes unavailable, you can retreat to one of the other aspects of music. It keeps the feeling fresh.

Just before the pandemic hit, John, Ben and I moved out into different apartments in Boston. We had big plans to play many shows, along with Clio, to support TEA, which we released in late 2019. When lockdown set in, we were separated, unable to play live shows or record together. I retreated to songwriting.

During the pre-vaccination phase of the pandemic, I also had a relationship of notable significance come to a (peaceful, amicable) close. Songwriting had been an illuminating and cathartic mode of processing this relationship from the beginning, and it continued to be a helpful way of codifying my internal thoughts and feelings into an external form. Often, I discovered the way I felt through the songs. I ended up with 5:

1. A 30,000 foot view of the relationship, written with the full picture of its start and end in mind
2. A song I had written as the relationship was blooming, depicting the at once surprising and inevitable feeling it evoked
3. A confident declaration of the relationship’s strength, written, in fact, as a Valentine’s Day gift
4. A song written partly as I began to recognize the cracks in the relationship, and partly as I reckoned with the immediate aftermath of its ending
5. A song processing the new normal of life in the after all, appreciating what had been, and looking forward to a future tinted by the good fortune of the past

As the band emerged from its lockdown-induced hibernation, I asked if we could record these 5 tracks as an EP. Another one of my favorite aspects of writing music is that it captures moments of your life in amber; not just as a picture or description, but with all the intermingled objectivity and subjectivity that comes with it. These were moments I wanted to capture.

So Ben, John, and I set out to record these in the home-studio John set up. It’s funny how the process of recording shifts the focus from the emotion and inspiration behind a song to the matter-of-fact craft of representing it sonically. It also adds color and depth to the music by including the perspectives and ideas of multiple people. We had a lot of fun playing music and creating together again, and are quite pleased with how it all came out.

My favorite kinds of songs have a quality of being quite specific, yet still relatable. I hope for the same from these songs; that you can listen and project onto them your own world and recognize in them things you have experienced in your own way. I also hope that you tap your toes and think, “wow what a bop!” In short: I hope you enjoy. Thanks for taking a listen.

about

Plumes Boston, Massachusetts

Plumes is Ben Long (on the drums!) Tim Green and John Thorsen. Music- listening to it, learning to play it, writing more of it- has been one of few things we've taken really seriously for the last 7 years. These songs grew through many late nights and missed appointments. Our songs are all really about something. It's sincere and sometimes naked. Hope you like it ... more
